Chapter 3.

„I heard music and came to see...“ said Mrs. Maimu Männik but what she saw made her fall silent. The sight was very displeasing. The two young people quickly raised up as they had got an electric shock. Their clothes were scattered all around the corner sofa, two condoms full of sperm were lying on the sofa table in the same position as they were chucked. She had to compose oneself while Joonas and Diana were hastingly enclothing themselves.
„This is very impudent! I haven’t seen in 45 years that students desecrate the schoolhouse like that!“
They spruced up their last clothes on them.
„We are very sorry, Mrs. Männik.“ Joonas tried to apologize.
„This time your apology is not enough. What were you thinking? I have to call the headmaster.“
„Please don’t do that! Maybe we can settle this in other way?“
„Shut up, Diana! This is already a bribery!“
As she couldn’t look in their eyes full of shame anymore, she took an outdated Ericsson mobile phone, that younger people were naming a brick, from her handbag and put on glasses with fat glass. She chose the number and pushed the „call“ button.
„Mr. headmaster. I have to announce that we just had a problem in the teachers’s room. Our students, Diana Kunnas and Joonas Väli were using the room for a fornication!“.
She listened what the headmaster had to say while mumbling.
„I’ll keep an eye on them until you are here.“
She finished her call, put the phone back to her handbag and said to the young people:
„Mr. Headmaster will be here any moment. Until that, please take an A4 paper sheets and a pen. You are going to write an explaing letter as I am dictating.“
For compensating their miscarriage and earning an easier punishment, they took the paper sheets and pens and sat down on the sofa. Joonas throw away the used condoms he had wrap in a napkins, sat back on the sofa and were ready to write.
„I, Joonas Väli, the student of the 10th grade, broke the internal rules of the Gymnasium of Karlova and used the teachers’s room as a brothel. We were cotton up to Mrs. Maimu Männik, the history teacher and caused her a moral shock.“
Diana and Joonas finished their letters by witing the date, their names and and signatures in the end. Maimu took the short letters. She placed the letters on the archive shelves of documents. She crossed hands behind her back and walked back and forth in front of the couple. She was shaking her head as she still couldn’t believe that something like this had happened. She stopped, looked at them with a keen eye of an eagle and asked as a commander:
„What were you thinking? That was the last thing I would had expected from you.“
„We were bored and we thought to do something exciting.“ anwsered Diana.
„And Joonas, you didn’t had a common sense to stop her?“
„I couldn’t say no. In front of her I was abulic.“
Diana casted a surprised glance at him. It was the most strange compliment she had got in awhile. His voice sounded candid as his heart.
„Well, that boy is golden! It’s sad that I used to mock him all the time.“ Diana was thinking. She was half-smiling surreptitiously, but Maimu’s eagle’s eye noticed it instantly.
„Is there something funny, Ms. Kunnas?“
„No, Mrs. Männik.“
Maimu casted a glance at clock on the wall, it was half past two in the afternoon.
„Do you even know what clause of the internal rules did you broke?“
„Yes, I do know.“ anwsered Joonas and because of shame, he didn’t dare to look at Mrs. Männik. The door of the teacher’s room opened and an overweight, bald middle aged man, the headmister Mr. Volmer Õunap, stepped in. He stopped beside Mrs Männik, glanced an angry look at Joonas and gave an order as a commander:
„You two are coming into my office!“
When they stepped into the roomy, ventilated room, Maimu gave two explaining letters to the headmaster. He told them to sit and sat on the comfortable arm-chair. First he read Diana’s explaining letter and then Joonas’s.
„What I’m going to do with you, Diana? This was your second internal rules breaking in one month. Do you want me to call your parents into the school to announce them about a serious punisment?“
„No, I don’t want.“ said Diana as accommodativing.
„Joonas, it was your second rules breaking in one day. What is happened to you?“
„I don’t know what I was thinking.“
„Please, continue.“
„It was my mistake that I agreed to make this foolish adventure. I regret.“
Mr. Õunap looked at Diana and Joonas and made his decision.
„This time you get only directives and lower rates this year. Is it clear?“
„Clear, Mr. Õunap.“ They said at one time.
„Now take a hike! I don’t want to see even your shadows!“
Joonas and Diana standed up, thanked for the easier punishment and said goodbye.
Diana was a hotblooded girl who could turn other’s and even herself’s relationships into a hell upon earth if necessary. She was the selfish girl who could care only about herself and her needs. The first two days had been fun and calm, but Joonas knew that she could ruin their relationship too. What Joonas saw in Diana? Why did he agreed to be in a relationship with her, although he knew it couldn’t be happy? Was Joonas in love with her? Hardly possible, because he didn’t had more sincere feeling than love. True, it was all about passion. Joonas didn’t care that the girl was a real hottie. But the other hand, this relationship was defending him from Siim who didn’t threaten him anymore far from violence. Still he knew that danger is not over. Sooner or later he should make the fatal mistake and everything could go wrong. This day was already impending.

2 April. It was Diana’s birthday. The one who had birthday was in a hurry so that she didn’t had time even for eating whole grain cereal with milk. For school clothing she had chose a low-necked blue tight-fitting tank top with „Sexy“ T-shirt template and a light blue tight jeans. For this day she had afforded more make-up and a french perfume with sweet aroma. This had to be her day, she had to be the number one among the popular pupils in school. Usually she went to the school with a city bus, but this day she was waiting for a friend. If Porsche 912 did drive up in front of her house and blow the horn few times, she scented herself more, put on a black jacket, put white sneakers on her feet, grabed at school bag and run outside. Kermo was standing beside car cowling, received her greetings with exaggerated flirting. Diana sat beside the driver and they started driving to school.
A very hot spring day was about to begin, that’s why many students were spending time in front of the schoolhouse, at the forecourt. All the benches and stairs of the front door were full of students. You could hear everywhere pupils’s amused shouts and laughing. Every stranger, who passed by the school, could think that an outdoor ceremony was beginning. Also Joonas and his three metalhead friends were sitting on a bench in front of the school. He had took an interest in a few English metal music magazines that he was browsing. Also in number of this month had a a free metal CD with collection of 20 songs.
A posh sporty car drived to the parking lot in front of the schoolhouse. A chatter stopped everywhere and everybody took a glance at the fancy car and lap up who they had bring to the school this time. Joonas was listening to one of the magazine’s CD with CD-player and read a new article about death/doom metal band Ghost Voyage and their world-wide concert tour. This article was so interesting that Joonas didn’t notice anything what was going around. Heli, a girl with modest gothic metal style, dig him in the ribs and if she noticed his asking look, pointed the finger at the parking lot. As Joonas noticed his girlfriend, he took off the small headphones, gave the magazine and CD-player to his friend, raised up and stepped at Diana to greet her. Diana stepped at her boyfriend, gave gaudy and attention catching smile. Their embrace and kiss was numb and emotionless. After that, she wanted him to leave her alone. Joonas suprisingly watched her leaving. Something was very wrong. „Did Diana turned back into the despising and harassing girl?“, was Joonas asking himself. He had knew always, that one day it all turn back the way it used to be, but he didn’t think it could happen so soon.
In the third break, Diana and her friends gathered together into the small auditorium. They had Mr. Õunap’s special permission, but they had a requirement that they wouldn’t break any internal rule. Diana was standing in the middle of her friends. Many hands run to her to congratulating, that she received one by one. She was opening her presents while drinking a red cherry sangria. Most of the things were clothes by latest fassion, make up and jewellery. If Joonas looked into the room for a moment, to see what is going on there, he noticed her frisky look.
„Joonas, come here to us! You are waited.“
Diana run to her boyfriend and kissed him more passionately and embraced him warmer than in the morning. She took his hand and bring him to the table of presents and sangria. Diana took an empty glass from another table, filled it with the red drink and gave it to her boyfriend. If Joonas was drinking the first sip, she asked:
„Darling, what are you giving me as a gift for my birthday? It must be something big, because your hands are empty.“
Joonas put the sangria glass on the table, looked at her and said:
„It’s not a big gift.“ he put his hand into breast pocket of his jacket and took a postage envelope, gave it to his girlfriend and said quietly:
„I couldn’t chose you a gift, that’s why I’m giving money. You can buy something you like.“
Diana was surprised, she took the envelope, opened it and saw 900 EEKs by 100 banknotes.
„You are a pathetic asshole, that you couldn’t buy me anything! I don’t want your money! I’m not a slut!“
„I’m sorry, I really couldn’t choose you anything.“ Joonas was apologizing.
„Beat it! I can’t stand you, asshole!“
Joonas bended down and took the envelope from the ground. Siim used the chance to put through his retribution. He catched at Joonas’s scruff and beat three times his chin with his knee. He bosomed the envelope with the money, pushed his spasmodically shivering hand against Joonas’s chin, that immediately started to bleed and Joonas run out of the auditorium.

Joonas was sitting in the back corner of the eating hall and a liter sized bowl filled with ice cubes was on the table. The other, a two liter sized bowl was almost half-filled with dark red blood and slobber. He was spiting blood there almost every minute. The left side of his chin was hurting as hell. An almost middle-aged school nurse was sitting in front of him, dig into harms and shaked her head.
„The harms of your teeth are much worse than I thought. Your sternmost tooth has broken into five pieces and is hanging on it’s tooth nerve. The next tooth is half-potruded from the tooth pulp and is moving.“
He noded as he couldn’t talk because of the pain. Joonas spit blood into the bigger bowl.
„Please hold ice on the harm and don’t move your head. If you touch the tooth nerve, you can have 12 on the 10-ball pain scale! I’ll go and bring the syringe and painkiller.“
„Maybe morphine would be better.“ anwsered Joonas and tried to smile in spite of the paralyzing pain.
„Place an ice cube into your mouth.“ said Karin with serious voice.
Joonas did what he got told. He placed the ice cube on the harm. That bringed out the pain more powerfully. Joonas screamed because of the pain and fainted. Karin leaned his head above the blood bowl and placed a stick behind his teeth so that his mouth would stay opened. That was the only way that the boy wouldn’t choke into his blood.
„Milvi, please come here and hold his head above the bowl. I’ll run into my office.“
Karin raised up and and run into the school nurse office on the third floor when Milvi sat in front of him. She was looking for a morphine pills from the painkillers. Morphine is for painkilling in case the other regular painkillers lose their effects. She found the pills and run back into the eating hall. Karin saw that the boy had came to yourself and was looking around while being confused. She sat on the chair instead of Milvi. She asked the school cook to bring a glass of lukewarm water and a tea spoon. The she put a pill into his mouth and said:
„That’s morphine, as you asked.“
Joonas swallowed the pill and drank on it the water that Karin gave him.
„Joonas, I’ll carry you off into the hospital. This harm needs a surgery.“
„I don’t want to. Maybe we can stop the bleeding some other way.“
„No, you can get some help in the hospital.“ said Karin with concerned seriousness.
Karin took the roll of housekeep towelette that the cook gave her and helped Joonas to raise up. She helped Joonas to walk through the school’s foyer. He opened his mouth for breathing and started to bleed in front of the other students. Many of them couldn’t stand the view and disgustedly turned their heads away. Karin took a long piece of the towelette, folded it up and put it on his mouth, helped him to walk out of the schoolhouse and drived to the Tartu University Hospital. The drive lasted a bit more than half hour because of the maze of traffic lights. By this time Joonas changed the towelletes about eight times because the bleeding hadn’t still stopped. In the hospital they received him, leaded him to the casualty ward. A man about sixty years, a dentist (surgeon), stepped in front of him. His wise look was thoughtful. Joonas sat on the dentist's chair, opened his mouth so that the dentist could look over the harms. The tooth was shreded to four which had caused snaged tooth pulp. The doctor injected a painkiller into the patient’s tooth pulp, took a surgical nippers with thin end and pulled out the moving tooth and the pieces of the other tooth with special carefulness. After that he injected a bloodcurdling liquid that had to stop the bleeding. He said after finishing his job:
„So far our work is done.“
He sat behind his desk, took a block of recipe- and bill papers from the drawer, wrote a bill and recipe. When he saw Joonas’s chin convulsive because of pain and bleeding, he took the phone and chose the number while pushing on the soft buttons. If he got contacted, he said:
„Do you have a free bed place in intensive care? Very good. Please register one for Joonas Väli.“
After he finished the call, he stepped in front of the patient and said:
„Because of the complications I have to send you to the intensive care. Today you are going to a surgery.“
Joonas bended the head desperately. He was afraid of being in the hospital.
Two hours later. The time was quarter past two. Joonas was lying on a gurney in the patients’s waiting room next to the operations room. He was wearing a pyjamas pinafore that was opened from the back side. An almost forty years old female nurse stepped in front of him. She looked at Joonas and said:
„The operations room is is ready. We have to remove the piece of your tooth surgically.“
„Isn’t there any other way to remove it?“ Joonas asked concernedly.
„That would be more difficult. We have to remove the tooth piece with incisions.“
„Well, do as you want!“
The nurse pushed the gurney into the operations room. They helped him to lie on the operating table. The doctor and nurse came closer. They were wearing a green sanitary wimples, respirators and hygienic pinafores.
The nurse put an anesthesia mask on to the patient’s face and said:
„Be calm and count until ten, you will fall asleep and feel no pain.“
Joonas was glancing at something unknown and counted slowly - one, two, three, four, five. Six, seven, eight... His look was turning hazy, head turned heavy and he drop asleep - heavy sleep of narcosis.
When the anesthesia took effect, the nurse removed the anesthesia mask and placed an end of a breathing apparatus into his nostrils. The surgeon sat next to the patient’s head, on chair that had set higher, the nurse sat on the other side.
„Mouth prop!“ asked the surgery doctor.
He got mouth prop, placed in the patient’s mouth and made the gap wider to get closer to teeth.
„Tongue retractor!“ the nurse gave him an instrument that reminded a jew’s harp.
„Suck out the blood with suction!“ When mouth had cleaned from blood with suction, he asked a scalpel with thin end. Then he made two incisions by millimetres very slowly and carefully. He dried the new blood with suction, the nurse gave a nippers thin as a needle. The surgeon accessed to the harm and removed slowly the tooth piece which broken edge was sharp, and put it into a little bowl.
„Clean!“ ordered surgeon.
The nurse dried the mouth from blood. Then she gave the doctor a mediacl needle and floss and sew the harm together even more slowly. He injected a bloodcurdling medicine. When he made sure that the bleeding had stopped he gave an order to awake the patient. The other nurse came closer with a wheelchair. With two minutes they helped him to sit. His head was spinning and a spectral fog was all around him. At the moment he barfed, the surgeon put a low metal bowl in front of his face and Joonas vomited twice. Noone was really surprised about this retching because it was a normal after-surgery reaction that befalled about six people from ten. The put a sweet antiemetic pill into Joonas’s mouth. After that, they carted the patient into an after-surgery department by the long coridor. In the visitor’s department he saw Diana raising up and laping up concernedly. Right away it returned to mind the girl’s inequitable and dishonourable behavior and his usual stress came back and it gave him such a tension headache that he fell asleep in the wheelchair. When they arrived at the hospital room the put him into bed under blanket with two male helpers.
Two days later. The time was 52 past 1.
Knock on the hospital room’s door. A nurse about twenty years old, entered the room. Joonas could read the name tag on her chest, that said her name was Johanna. Johanna smiled kindly, opened the patient’s medication card and said:
„Your tooth pulp hasn’t bleed for two days already. That’s a good sign. But I want to see how the harms have been healed, so please open your mouth.“
Joonas opened his mouth and Johanna diged into it with tiny mirror, she looked at every corner of his tooth pulp. Her smile meant good.
And she said:
„The tooth pulp harms look good, so I came to announce you that you can go to the home healing.“
Joonas was send to the patient’s coatroom where were all of the patient’s private clothes and things. While dressing himselef, he noticed that his clothes were washed very clean. He took his wallet and checked that he still had all of his money, ID-, bankcards and etc. He exited the hospital and breathed easier. The third day he was at home all day long. He didn’t worry because his mother had sent an aegrotat to his school. His mother wanted him to chose – will he register a complaint against violence of Siim in the police precinct or not. It would had helped his mother to pay all the cure costs. But he was afraid of Siim’s reaction if he would knew about the complaint. But at the same time he dread to meet Diana by accident. The next day, friday, he had to go to the school anyway.
A knock on the door woke Joonas from the thoughts.
„Yes!“ he said.
The door opened. His mother Siiri looked into the room behind the door. Siiri was 42 years thin woman. Despite the fact that she was almost middle aged, she still looked good. She had half-long chestnut brown hair.
„Joonas, you have a visitor. Come downstairs.“
„Who is it?“ asked Joonas and looked in the eye.
„Diana, your schoolmate.“
„I don’t want to see her. Please, send her away!“
„Joonas, don’t be impolite.“ she reproved didactically, but she couldn’t hide that she was caressing.
„Seriously, I do not want to see her.“ he repeated and remained firm.
He looked at his desk. He opened it’s left drawer, took a math textbook and opened it from page 105, he also took a chequered blotter. With that action, he showed to his mother, that they were not going to argue about it anymore. Siiri sighed, shaked her head and said:
„Okay, I’ll make up an excuse. But the dinner is ready after an hour!“
„Okay, thanks mom!“
His mother leaved and closed the door, but Joonas couldn’t concentrate on studying, although he had a lots of material to study. The window of his room was above the front door of the house and was opened to freshen the air, that’s why Joonas heard the conversation between his mother and Diana:
„I’m sorry, my son doesn’t feel himself well enough to speak to you.“
„I’m sorry I gave you trouble. But is he coming to the school tomorrow?“
„It’s okay. I’m not sure. We will see it in the morning.“
„Please hand on my letter to him.“ said Diana and gave her a paper sheet folded to four.
„I will hand on it. Good night!“
„Bye!“
The front door closed.
Siiri placed the letter on a low shelf next to the living room’s door. She went to the kitchen being in hurry because she afraid that the oven-baked salmon with lemon and Mediterranean spices may start to burn. She grabed the potholders and opened the trap-door of the oven. A puff of hot steam and a bit burned smell spreaded out. The oven-baked salmon was dark brown on the top. That was close call. She cut a little piece, tasted it and found that there was no burned taste. She took out the salmon and put it on the stove, shut down the oven, cut the salmon into six and placed it in the white oval fictile plate. Next to the salmon Siiri put vegetables stewed in a little liquid and placed it all in the middle of the table. The daughter had covered the table.
While all the bustle stepped into the house a fourty years old man with half long a bit curly hair and burly body shape. He placed a suitcase on the living room’s table and hanged a dark blue leather coat on the coat-hook, stepped into the kitchen and greeted. He looked at the salmon first, then at his wife and said grumpyly:
„That’s why I smelled the burn smell already in the vestibule.“
„There’s nothing wrong with the salmon. It’s baked well in the inside.“ anwsered Siiri.
She stepped at her husband, gave him a little kiss and went to the kitchen sink, washed her hands, dried them and said:
„Now we are gonna gather together to eat. I call the children.“
Twelve years old Jaanika was sitting in the living room with her laptop. MSN and the website Rate.ee were opened. She was writing with someone in the MSN.
„Please go and call your brother downstairs and come to eat.“
„Can I do it later? Mommy, I have a chat going on right now.“ scrounged Jaanika, trying to get more time.
„No, now!“ mom didn’t gave ground.
Jaanika sighed, logged out of the MSN, standed up and while muttering to herself she went to the second floor to call her creep brother to eat. At the same time, the husband and wife sat at the table, both sitting at either end of the table. Kalmer poured a fresh coffee into a big porcelain cup, poured a bit of coffee cream, added two sugar cubes and opened the suitcase while mixing the coffee. He took out some documents and while drinking the hot coffee he readed a paper that was a worksheet of an incoming contract. He wrote something engrossedly and took a new sip.
„Could you deal with the work things later, please? The kids are coming to eat any moment.“ said Siiri and next to the salmon she placed a glass pitcher with fresh unpasteurized milk from her mother.
With displeased mutter to himself, he placed the documents back to the suitcase, closed it, standed up and beared it off to his home cabinet. Kalmer came back to the kitchen at the same time as the children.
„Jaanika, please wash your hands before you sit at the table.“ said Kalmer to his daughter.
„But I washed.“
„Wash your hands!“ the father gave an order with a voice that couldn’t stand any arguing.
Jaanika washed hands while muttering. She dried hands into her clothes and sat at the table and started ordering right away:
„I want the tail piece.“
As she got what wanted, she took also the vegetables and squeezed a ketchup on the salmon. While the food plate was given from hand to hand, asked Siiri from her daughter interestedly:
„Jaanika, have you studied?“
„There are a bit of the tasks left. I’ll finish before I go to sleep.“
„Joonas, have your teeth healed?“ asked Kalmer from his son.
„They are still hurting a bit, but I can eat someway.“
„It was a big harm. Tell me how it happened.“
„You know about it?“ asked Joonas without anwsering to his father’s question.
„They connected with your mom from the hospital. Now, please tell me how it happened.“
„It happened by violence.“ Joonas anwsered shortly.
„Did you started a fight?“
„No, I was the victim.
„What have you decided? Are you going the write a petition to the police against Siim?“ father didn’t stop asking and his look turned more serious.
Joonas looked down being confused. He stopped cutting peaces of the salmon and making a puree from the vegetables and fall silent. He twirled the fork in his food but couldn’t anwser because of the hesitations in him.
„I don’t hear your anwser, my son.“ asked Kalmer rigidly.
„Don’t be so strict. He is confused anyway.“ said Siiri to support her son.
„If he is confused, he have to be able to fight with it.“ said Kalmer to his wife.
Then he said again to his son:
„Joonas, anwser me.“
„I couldn’t make the decision yet.“ anwsered Joonas flinchingly.
„Why, do you afraid Siim?“
„Yes, he’s a dangerous person.“
„I haven’t teached you to be afraid, but to stand up for yourself!“
„But I don’t know if I write a petition against Siim in the police.“
„That means I have to do it for yourself!“
„Honey, don’t impose on!“ said Siiri being concerned.
„Damn, you don’t barge in!“ the father bawled out and biffed on the table so that the table was shaking, knives and forks clanged and glasses falled down. Then he continued:
„You have cosseted him and ruined him with your pampering! I wonder you don’t suckle him! But it’s okay. I still have time to guide him to the right way, my way!“
„Joonas will choose his way by himself! We are not gonna force him.“
„Be silent, my wife! Until I am the main one who earns a living for us, I chose what is good for my son!“
„Shut up, both of you! I have made a decision, that have to calm down you both.“ said Joonas.
„Do you offer a compromise?“ asked Kalmer.
„Yes, If Siim doesn’t endanger my life by one month, I will not sue him.“
„No, no.“ the father was shaking his head. He frowned again, stared at Joonas as he was the worst criminal and said: „I don’t like it.“
„You don’t have to like it. I know what is the best for me by myself and I decide, who will I want to follow!“ continued Joonas while he blew a gasket. True, it was the first time when Joonas defy authority – his father. He standed up from the table.
„Where are you going?“
„Dad, I will go to my room. I’m not hungry anymore.“
„Sit back at the table and finnish the dinner!“
„I’ll eat later, when you both have calmed down. Father, I will not relinquish my decision. You will accept it or...“ he gave an opinion nervously.
„I don’t want to eat anymore too. Thanks a lot for ruining the dinner.“ said Jaanika. She standed up and went to her room after her brother.

It's getting more interesting! Is Joonas able to resist Diana, and how long will last the passion between them, I wonder. :-)
